LABORATORIES

To facilitate collaboration and to efficiently manage resources within the department / institute, faculty members with similar specialties and interests are grouped together to form a laboratory. Currently there are 10 laboratories within the department / institute. Their names and major interests are listed in the following table.

Air Pollution / Planetary Boundary Layer Laboratory

Boundary layer and local circulation characteristics in Taiwan, surface energy exchange budgets, air quality monitoring, environment assessment, pollutant deposition processes, regional environment change.

Atmospheric Chemistry Modelling Laboratory

To research and develop a hierarchy of the state-of¡Vthe-art numerical models to simulate and predict atmospheric environment on the city, regional, and global scales.

Climate Dynamics and Simulation Laboratory

Short term climate variability and prediction, climate modeling and East Asian monsoon.

Cloud and Aerosol Laboratory

Acid rain, cloud chemistry/microphysics, air pollution monitoring / modeling, atmospheric chemistry.

Mesoscale Simulation Laboratory

(1) to investigate the characteristics of mesoscale convective systems over Taiwan and its vicinity via the analysis of observation data and numerical simulation results.

(2) Numerical simulation of mesocsale atmospheric phenomena, Typhoon circulation and track modeling, acid rain and air pollution modeling.

Radar Meteorology Laboratory

(1) Study the structures and evolutions of severe weather phenomena such as typhoon, Mei-Yi and local thunderstorms using integrated mesoscale observations.

(2) Doppler radar wind and thermodynamic retrieval algorithms.

(3) Developing QPE algorithm, including an ongoing plan to proceed the dual-polarization radar upgrade.

(4) Nowcasting, radar data assimilation, and QPF.

Synoptic-Dynamics Laboratory

Topographic effects on atmospheric motions and local circulation, cyclogenesis, frontogenesis, cold-air outbreak, instabilitiy mechanisms, statistical prediction methodology.

Theoretical Meteorology Laboratory

Theoretical and modelling studies of wave-cisk, topographic effects, precipitation and etc.

Meteorological Satellite Laboratory 

Weather system monitoring and predicting, atmospheric sounding retrieval, rainfall estimation, cloud parameters, vegetation index, aerosol, atmospheric radiation, global change from satellite observation, sea surface temperature and atmospheric correction.

Air-Sea Interaction Laboratory

Global and regional air-sea interaction, hydrological cycle and climate dynamics.
