Prof. Shih-Wei Fang and his research interest
Hello everyone,
I am Shih-Wei Fang, a new assistant professor joining the NCU-AS family. I received my Ph.D. degree in Earth System Science at UC Irvine, USA and have experienced two post-doctoral research at Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany and IBS Center for Climate Physics in Busan, South Korea. My research focuses on climate-related topics, including El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Dynamics, Paleo-climate changes from volcanic eruptions, and Climate impact on ancient human evolution.
Specifically, one current research is on volcanic impacts on ENSO dynamics (Fig. 1), which investigates how volcanic eruptions from different locations and amplitude can displace the tropical precipitation, or the Intertropical Convergence Zone, and further influence the probability of the existence of distinct ENSO types. Another research topics is to understand how past climate changes may alter the DNA diversity of our ancestors, Homo lineages, through the changes in food availability and their habitat feasibility (Fig. 2). With these diverse interests, I am looking forward to work on more exciting and more essential research in NCU-AS.
